Yes! There really is one. The Holy Grail of weight loss. Something that washes away the fat, curbs the hunger pangs, gives you energy. I WANT some!!
Asterix and Obelix. You’ve gotta love these guys. Intrepid friends defending their village against all odds with a little help from some magic potion. How I wish I could be like Asterix who always carries a small flask of potion and when challenges arrive he sips a little – ZAP! – he is full of strength and energy – ready to conquer all. In reality I am more like Obelix who fell in the potion at birth and is now obese and is never allowed any magic potion. He is still massively strong … but unfortunately he is also massive. And I don’t want to be any more.
Thirst is often mistaken for hunger. I have eaten and been dissatisfied – hunting through the fridge and pantry for something that will keep me happy. Finally had a good drink and realised that thirst was the problem all along.
One of the books I read likened dieting without increasing water intake to dampening clothes and rubbing soap on them to get them clean. But not having enough water to lather up and rinse away the dirt. The author painted an image of all those fat cells sitting in my bloodstream wanting to leave my body but needing a ride on some extra fluid. Not sure about the science behind that but it helps me get through my extra bit of water every day. And a study in 2010 discovered that drinking a glass of water before a meal made a reduced calorie diet 30% more effective! Definitely worth trying.
It is best to drink throughout the day rather than gulping down your eight glasses in one or two sessions so keep a drink bottle handy. Part of getting ready for this weight loss season was sorting out my drink bottles. Initially I baulked at spending extra on a great drink bottle but I have found one that never leaks, is BPA free, looks great and fits in the holder of my car. I have a glass one for at home. And on a good day I put it in the fridge because apparently drinking cold water raises your metabolism anywhere up to 30%. I know – I could be a bit of grasping at straws there. Hey, I wonder if drinking the water through a straw would make me feel as though I was having a treat and therefore make me less likely to eat later on???
Today I am going to print out a picture of Asterix and tape it to my drink bottle. To remind me of how fabulous I can feel with a regular dose of this magic potion.
You might like to try it too.
Whatever it takes,
